Wings Big Swim 2010

imgleftThe Wings Big Swim Team successully finished the swim across the channel in July 2010. The idea for doing the swim originated from one of the youth workers, Fraser Marchbank, who due to being diagnosed with arthritis in his ankles was then unable to participate in sports that he once used to enjoy. Swimming was one of the sports he could do and train for, so the idea of swimming the English Channel emerged. The idea grew and became one of the biggest challenges that Wings South West will possible face this year. It was a great opportunity to raise some much needed money for the work that goes on. The swim has also now enabled Wings South West to raise their profile in Northern Devon and wider.

Wings South West raised over £15,000 through this and other events over the year. This is enough to fund another youth worker for a year or keep the youth cafe ‘The Source’ running two nights a week for a year or keep the NEET courses (courses for young people at risk; not in Education, Employment or Training) running 3 times a week for a year. With a drop in local youth provision in Bideford, Wings South West is keen to be able to keep up the work that is currently happening.
