Charitable Objects

When Wings was formed ten years ago there were only a few charitable objects and we fell under four of them:

  • To help alleviate poverty
  • To advance education
  • To provide facilities for recreation
  • To advance the Christian faith (where appropriate)

Since then what we do and what the Charities Commission cover has changed considerably.  Although there is no need to legally modify the very broad original objects, The Trustees felt the following objects better reflect our day to day operations and probably give people a better idea of our overall goals:

To act as a resource principally for young people up to the age of 25 living in Northern Devon, or other parts of the world, by providing advice and assistance and organising programmes of physical, educational, sport and other activities as a means of:

(a) advancing in life and helping young people by developing their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as independent, mature and responsible individuals
(b) advancing education
(c) relieving unemployment
(d) providing recreational and leisure time activity in the interests of social welfare for people living in the area of benefit who have need by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disability, poverty or social and economic circumstances with a view to improving the conditions of life of such persons

To promote and protect the physical and mental health of young people through the provision of support, education and practical advice.

To advance the education of young people in the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment.

To promote, for the benefit of the public, rural or urban regeneration in areas of social and economic deprivation (and in particular in rural Northern Devon) by all or any of the following means:

  • (a) the advancement of education, training or retraining, particularly among unemployed young people, and providing unemployed young people with work experience
  • (b) the creation of training and employment opportunities by the provision of workspace, buildings, and/or land for use on favourable terms
  • (c) the provision of housing for those who are in conditions of need and the improvement of housing in the public sector or in charitable ownership provided that such power shall not extend to relieving any local authorities or other bodies of a statutory duty to provide or improve housing
  • (d) the promotion of public safety and prevention of crime

To promote equality and diversity for the public benefit by:

  • (a) the elimination of discrimination on the grounds of race, gender, disability, sexual orientation or religion
  • (b) providing activities to foster understanding between young people from diverse backgrounds
  • (c) cultivating a sentiment in favour of equality and diversity

To encourage young people to explore Faith, particularly Christianity via, for example, assemblies, services, study groups or other activities.

To further or benefit the residents of Northern Devon, without distinction of sex, sexual orientation, race or of political, religious or other opinions by associating together the said residents and the local authorities, voluntary and other organisations in a common effort to advance education and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation leisure time occupation with the objective of improving the conditions of life for the residents.

In furtherance of these objects but not otherwise, the Trustees shall have power:

To establish or secure the establishment of a community centre and to maintain or manage or co-operate with any statutory authority in the maintenance and management of such a centre for activities promoted by the charity in furtherance of the above objects.
